2-PAK PARK, DUBLIN -- Hope for a rare win at the Premier level was comprehensively shattered as the Sluggers were quickly reminded of their competitive inadequacies in what has become an extraordinarily difficult 2014 season.

Guys, I think we have a problem hitting the ball.

-- Sluggers OF Darryl Clancy

"Guys, I think we have a problem hitting the ball," said Sluggers all-star OF Darryl Clancy after the game.

He couldn't be more correct.

A team not having any problems hitting the ball are the Batpak. The standout blast of the game came from John O'Flynn, who smashed the ball to deep center field far beyond the reach of anyone.

Down by 8 runs after the first two innings, the Sluggers were struggling to reach base, nevermind score runs. And winning the game was never within reach.

"We're simply no longer competitive at the Premier level," said Sluggers pitcher John Edwards, who was at least able to protect himself on a vicious line-drive through the mound to get a dramatic third out. "A combination of age, a lack of practice, lack of game knowledge, losing key personnel... all these things make for a very weakened team."

The Sluggers will be happy with the two week summer break to start August, and will look to rebound against the Dublin Bay Packers, who have also struggled in the top division. The Sluggers' next game is August 12, again at 2-Pak Park.
