Time Has Run Out.

Time Has Run Out

CASLTEKNOCK COLLEGE, DUBLIN -- Facing playing in Division 1 after relegation from the Premier class, the Sluggers (3-11, forfeited relegation playoff in 2014) will not be returning to Leinster softball in 2015.

If somebody wants to compete at the highest level, and that means leaving the club, then they should play where they will enjoy playing. That's what it's all about.

-- Sluggers veteran John Edwards

Unable to field a team for their playoff relegation game, the Sluggers as a group were clearly not prepared to compete at any level, nevermind at the Premier level. Recruiting 6 or more Premier-level players was simply not an achievable possibility during the offseason; and the remaining players available for full-time play in 2015 - Michiyo Hogan, Junichiro Aoki and Darryl Clancy - felt the desire to compete in Premier, even though it would mean leaving the Castleknock club, and the Sluggers.

"If somebody wants to compete at the highest level, and that means leaving the club, then they should play where they will enjoy playing. That's what it's all about," said Sluggers veteran John Edwards. "If anyone has a problem with that, then that's their problem. Those guys are well capable of playing in the Premier. It's just unfortunate that we don't have a Premier division slot."

The Castleknock club had plans of filling the Sluggers' gaps in their roster with enthusiastic club players and continuing on as Sluggers in Division 1. There was even the real possibility that Wildcat extras could fill in any gaps in the Bearcats' roster, and the club could have ran three teams: two in Division 2 and one in Division 1. As part of the Castleknock Softball Club system, the Sluggers occupy a much-sought-after position in Softball Leinster Division 1.

But now, there may be a complex reshuffling within the Castleknock club. There are any number of possibilities, a very likely one that with the absence of the Sluggers, the Bearcats now return to Division 1. But no matter what happens, the core of the Sluggers have moved on, and the Sluggers as we have come to know them since 2000, are no more - and the Sluggers will be "wound up".

Where does this leave this website? Sadly, we too will now have to "wind things up". This website will no longer contain Sluggers updates, as there will no longer be a Sluggers team to follow. The same is true of the Sluggers Facebook page.

John will continue to write for himself, in his blog at http://www.ridelikeaturtle.com , where he will start providing more periodic updates (mostly about cycling) and eventually softball will become a part of the blog when he returns to active play in July 2015.

Michael Shea also writes a general personal blog (http://sheamonu-granfalloons.blogspot.co.uk/), not normally about softball, but larger issues in Irish life and politics.
